The 41st National Convention of the South African Chemical institute (SACI) was held in East London between 1 and 6 December 2013.  The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Chemistry for Africa: New Perspectives for the 21st Century’.

To directly address the conference theme, Prof Paul Watts gave a keynote lecture on Tuesday 3rd December entitled ‘Continuous Flow Reactors: The interface between Chemistry and Engineering’ where he highlighted how new technology could be used to enhance chemical manufacturing capability within South Africa.

On Wednesday 4th December Prof Ben Zeelie gave a keynote lecture entitled ‘Coal-microalgae composites: A new approach to renewable energy?’ illustrating how the technology pioneered within InnoVenton can be used in biofuel production.
